I'm finding it increasingly hard to ride my bike to work. I know I feel better when I ride; I'm more alert, work harder, feel fresher, more tolerant of Chuck, etc., but it isn't always easy to convince myself to get up at 5:30.

I've moved progressively farther away from Salsa world headquarters in the last three years and what was a 40 minute spin became a 60 minute workout became an almost two hour battle into an ever-present headwind. Today I managed to roll out of bed on my own. Well, there was some prodding and pushing involved and my girlfriend was fanning wafts of a hot breakfast into the bedroom but the rest was on my own. I blearily ate, packed my bag and dressed only to be confronted with the weather forecast.

Winter storm conditions in the Dakotas...
Hard rains and wind this afternoon...

My brain waged a quick and vicious war against itself. Exercise vs. cleaning off the bike. Warm and dry in the car vs. $2 a gallon in the car. The childlike joy of riding in the rain vs. the adultlike misery of riding in the rain. My car won today, and as I look out the office window at a grey but dry sky I think to myself,

"I need to stop trusting my TV."
