I have been really sick.
Not just your average sniffle and cough kind of sick, but a shaking with malarial fever and hallucinating kind of sick. Nice Christmas present, eh? I was housebound for three days, but on Sunday I did have the pleasure of watching Smokey and the Bandit on TV. Yes it's a really bad movie (not as bad as the two sequels) but I love it anyway. I hadn't seen it in at least 10 years and there were some interesting points I noted in my Robitussin haze.
1. Trans Ams were the ultimate cool in 1977. Especially with T-Tops.
2. You can drive from Texas to Georgia and only stop for gas once and food twice.
3. Gas only cost 47 cents a gallon. Two cheeseburgers were $1.50.
4. Sally Fields was cute. No, really. She looked good in jeans.
5. Burt Reynolds character's real name was Bo Darville. Remember this, it will be a game winning trivia question for you someday.
6. Having a complete disregard for the speed limit and officer's of the law is funny. Don't believe me? Rent Cannonball Run.
7. An entire subculture and lingo built around the CB radio has disappeared thanks to cell phones.
8. Jerry Reed who did the soundtrack was also Bandit's sidekick driving the beer truck. Apparently I am the only person alive who didn't already know this.
9. Bandit hardly looks at the road when he drives. It's cool when Burt does it. Scares me to death when my dad does it.
This movie may have been more influential on me in my developing years then I realized and may have bits of wisdom for other bikers like you. For instance, I still believe more speed tends to solve problems. Other lessons I've carried over to the bike include locking up your wheels on gravel is fun, and you can jump anything if you go fast enough.
All of us here at Salsa would like to wish you and your family a happy holiday. 10-4 good buddy, over and out.
