Hola Amigos,

Got some race photos, bike photos or action shots of your Salsa rigs in action? Email them on over to us and we will post your emails and pics on our site.

For example: Here is a shot of our favorite Salsa Pro, Jeff Hall, cleaning up at the local races.

Team Salsa/Superteam is a Cat 1,2,3 team based in Minneapolis that has enjoyed much success already in the early road season. Here is the red and white train taking the field through on the bell lap. Their team leader du jour, Aric Hareland, took the race that day and the team sealed the Team Overall for the 6-race series.

Check out all the goings on of Team Salsa Cycles/Superteam Racing here.

Building Trails

The Minneapolis/St Paul area is fortunate to have some mighty fine mtb trails within our urban environment. There are numerous ways that you can help out with stuff like that so we're gonna point you in one of those directions.

Check out www.mocatrails.org to learn more about the fully legal trail system being established in the Wirth Park system, just north and west of downtown.

It's an opportunity for you to get involved with helping our sport grow by providing more and better places to ride, and a chance to help demonstrate to land managers that mtb trails can be built to be sustainable and eco-friendly.

Enough rambling. Check the website. Grab some trail tools. Go help out.

Shameless Self Promotion for those in the Minneapolis/St Paul area
(warning - includes some artsy fartsy language and descriptions)

At risk of giving away my true identity, I'd like to invite all of you to my first ever Photo Exhibit. It opens tonight at One On One Bicycle Studio/GO! Coffee in downtown Minneapolis. 117 Washington Avenue North. 6pm till late tonight so stop on by. The show will stay up for 5 weeks so feel free to drop in at any time to check it out.

Here's where the artsy fartsy language comes in. Don't let that scare you off though.

"In his first exhibit, Michael Riemer puts forth four series of photographs that stand as a personal portrayal of himself. Life, Bicycles, China, and Seoul's Nam Dae Moon Market are presented through Riemer's eye.

Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, where his parents were missionairies, Riemer has lived in Minnesota since 1989.

As personal as these photographs are to him, however, they offer viewers a chance to consider the sometimes simple, and at other times complex, experiences that influence our beliefs, our being, and our lives."

This is National Bike to Work week sponsored by Shimano and the League of American Bicyclists. What? You didn't know? Well check out all the goods and some helpful commuting tips at www.bike-to-work.com, then get out and ride. Seve, Salsa's man-about-town, and myself rode the 22 miles in today and I have to say it was a great ride. Everything is green from the recent rains and it's a perfect temperature out there right now. So go ahead, take a chance, feel inspired, and leave the car at home tomorrow.

Props to Jeff Hall, Salsa's pro mountain biker for bringing home a couple more wins in this young racing season.

Jeff rode his Salsa Caballero to two convincing wins this past weekend. Saturday, he demolished the field by almost 8 minutes at the Mud Madness XII in Mankato, Minnesota. Sunday, he took it to all at the Lebanon TT Blast in Eagan, Minnesota.

We're fortunate to have Jeff riding and racing our bikes. He's a tirelessly hard worker, who puts his equipment to the test. Somehow he manages to work a real 40-hour a week job, train for competition, AND help his wife raise their infant son. It's the kind of responsibility that a lot of us use as an excuse for not being able to accomplish our goals.

Not so for Jeff though. When you see him at the races, you can be sure that he's been blessed with some incredible physical bike ridin' talent, but you should also know that he has worked, and continues to work, darn hard for the success he finds on the bike.

We appreciate his efforts greatly.

Do The Right Thing

If you read many of the mountain bike publications, I'm sure you heard about the tragic death of Mark Reynolds, who was killed by a mountain lion while mountain bike riding in California.

What you may not have heard about is that fact that Mark Reynolds was a very generous soul who worked hard to make bikes available for kids that couldn't afford to have them. Take a minute to think about the beauty of that act. Kids that didn't have bikes, being given them, and the inherent joys and freedoms that come with that ownership.

Mark is gone now, but we each have the opportunity to contribute in his place. See the links below to learn more about how Mark tried to improve some kids lives, and choose whether this is a way for you to help out as well.

http://www.markreynoldsfund.com

They are also holding a Memorial Ride on June 12 in St Joseph, Missouri. Find out more about the ride through the link above.

As Spring rolls on and Summer threatens, we'd like to post this letter we got from Salsafficienado Jose Espinoza of Costa Rica. He sent it after a training ride this past February but until now, we haven't had a good way to share it. Golly Ma, dem cputers shure r powrful. Anyway, it's a tale that many of us can probably relate to.

Jose wrote:

hI EVERYONE....

Peace for all of you ....

Last sunday was a average training ride in the mtb bike with the buddies, we was 6 guys angry for ride long and hard these day...we decide to do a long steady pace ride climbing all we can and getting going down... in some moment we find a right path looking down and fun we took that we fly down for around of 30 minutes and then find a river and no singletrack , dirt road or something like that, nothing really deep into the forest but no road...well we look each other and decide to hike with our bikes closed to the river down trying to find a track for get into some road again..after half hour hike we find nothing...so what we do?.

Easy, get back over of foot printed shoes on dirt and climb all that we down.! getting up hard the first part, bikes in our shoulders, sweating like a pigs...was 11 am into the 30 celsius grades...we have 5 hours in our legs...and still we have get back to home we was 70 kms far from home. so We ride...

And still we laugh and joke on the ride...no regrets...fun all around...tired but happy, tha's the soul and the meaning of mbt, the free ride for me is that!

keep happies....and get peace....

ride Cowgirl, ride.

Salsa sponsors a number of teams and individuals out there, and the America's Dairyland pro women's team is one of my favorites.

Affectionately nicknamed the cowgirls for their holstein-themed bikes and jerseys, they have fun everywhere they go and are just darn nice folks. Why do I mention them today? Because their team mechanic Erik Amodt paid me the nicest compliment I've heard in quite awhile yesterday.

"Nicely done again David. There will most certainly be a nice comfy chair waiting for you in your next life..."

So I've got that going for me.

I'm finding it increasingly hard to ride my bike to work. I know I feel better when I ride; I'm more alert, work harder, feel fresher, more tolerant of Chuck, etc., but it isn't always easy to convince myself to get up at 5:30.

I've moved progressively farther away from Salsa world headquarters in the last three years and what was a 40 minute spin became a 60 minute workout became an almost two hour battle into an ever-present headwind. Today I managed to roll out of bed on my own. Well, there was some prodding and pushing involved and my girlfriend was fanning wafts of a hot breakfast into the bedroom but the rest was on my own. I blearily ate, packed my bag and dressed only to be confronted with the weather forecast.

Severe thunderstorms coming...
Winter storm conditions in the Dakotas...
Hard rains and wind this afternoon...

My brain waged a quick and vicious war against itself. Exercise vs. cleaning off the bike. Warm and dry in the car vs. $2 a gallon in the car. The childlike joy of riding in the rain vs. the adultlike misery of riding in the rain. My car won today, and as I look out the office window at a grey but dry sky I think to myself,

"I need to stop trusting my TV."

The Otter.

It's been almost a month since the Sea Otter Classic, but it's not too late to say a few good words about this event. Make no mistake, The Otter is about bikes. All kinds of bikes. Roadies interlaced with mountain bikers, trackies mingling among BMX'ers. Old people. Young people. Families. Children. Trails to ride and stuff to look at. People to talk with and beautiful green hills to gawk at after a long Minnesota winter. Do yourself a favor and check out The Otter next year. If you do, be sure to stop by the Salsa booth to introduce yourself. We'd love to have the chance to meet you in person.

Salsa is proud to be associated with several fine events this season. Here's a brief rundown so you can check 'em out.

The Nature Valley Grand Prix, June 10-13, throughout Minnesota

The Nature Valley Grand Prix is a professional men's and women's road stage race that takes place right here in Minnesota. Salsa is proud to be the sponsor of this years Sprint Competition. Stages take place up on the Iron Range, in downtown Minneapolis, Red Wing, and Stillwater. Lots of the best pro teams in the United States will be taking part, but keep a special lookout for the fast ladies of Team TDS-Schwalbe who ride Salsa bikes and components. We'll also have a Salsa booth set up at each days stage so folks can check out our goods. For more information, check out www.MinnBikeFestival.com

2004 Horribly Hilly Hundreds, June 12, Mount Horeb, Wisconsin

If you're looking to test your metal, check out the Horribly Hilly Hundreds. This road event claims to be the Toughest One Day Challenge in the Midwest. What's so tough about it? 200 kilometers (124.5 miles) with 10,700 feet of elevation gain. Not sure you're ready for that? Then consider the 100 kilometer (67.5 miles) version with a mere 5,700 feet of climbing. One lucky participant in the HHH is going to take home a brand new Salsa Campeon frameset. That makes you want to ride doesn't it? For more information, check out www.horriblyhilly.com

Ore To Shore Mountain Bike Epic, August 14, Marquette, Michigan

Here's one for the dirt lovers. 28-mile or 48-mile point to point mountain bike races in Michigan's beautiful Upper Penninsula. Sounds good doesn't it? 1600 riders thought so in 2003. Events for children make this a true family festival as well, so load up the crew and head on over. More info can be found at www.oretoshore.com

For all you Twin Cities area folks, word on the street is that Lebanon Hills opened up another mile or so of fresh cut singletrack today. I suggest heading out there, putting some knobbies on the dirt, and breathing some fresh Minnesota Spring air. Cuz that's what I'm about to do. Props to MORC for all they've done to make Leb Hills a continuing success.

Don't know what MORC is? Check out www.morcmtb.org to learn more. Then pony up some cash to join and help support the sport.
