Day 1: Interbike

With two days of setting up the booth, building bikes and standing in the dust at Dirt Demo behind us, it was time to put on our happy faces and meet and greet all the great dealers that have helped Salsa Cycles grow these past 24 years.

The show has started off perfectly. So many dealers have been coming to the booth just raving about the ride of the new Salsa Primero S3 frameset, which most had a chance to ride at Dirt Demo. They couldn't believe that we had an S3 frame in full production. Sure, you can get an S3 frame from a custom builder and pay those custom frame prices, but here at Salsa we have teamed up with True Temper to bring the world it's first ever full production run of these super-lightweight frames. We are talking 56cm complete steel road bikes at under 17lbs.

Make sure to hit our 2006 Frame and clothing preview to see all the details on this new frameset and all the new clothing designs by Wes Stobbe.

Gotta get running since Day 2 is about to start and I have to help Miker set up the bikes and vacuum the carpet. Yeah, it isn't all glamorous.

Who are your friends?

As Interbike approaches, I have been following a bunch of our industry friend's blogs. I love to do this. It's part of my daily routine. I put my 3 year old twins to bed, and then check out for about 30 minutes.

Recently, I ran across a blog that kind of gave Salsa a back handed stab. The kind of stab that builds yourself up at the expense of someone else. I'm not into naming names so don't ask. I won't tell you. I was bummed and a bit surprised. This is from a brand that is actually using some of our Salsa products on their show bikes. In fact, we have occasionally shared some of our prototype samples to get feedback because we value their opinion. I thought it was a mutual respect. Maybe this wasn't intentional. At least that is what I want to believe. But, it made me realize that we all should value our true friends.

This morning, one of my best friends of all time met me at 7:00AM to do a morning mtb ride. We rode the MN River Trail, a trail we used to ride a lot together. We both rode our steel bikes. His a custom 29" IF and I was on my tried and trued Ala Carte. While riding, I realized that the last time we rode this trail, was before my twins were born. We were riding our steel cross bikes, a Salsa and a Steelman. 3 years ago?! Wow. The ride itself was amazing but not as good as the constant conversation between good friends while riding our trusted steel bikes. Folks, 3 years is too long. Make efforts to let your good friends know you appreciate them. A simple ride is all it takes.

I've been kind of rambling a bit with this blog, but I am going somewhere with this. As we head off to Interbike, I'm thinking of all those industry friends that I get to see only once a year. I really hope that I get the opportunity to come and see you, give you a good firm handshake and catch up. For those of you that are attending Interbike and don't know me or any of the Salsa folks, please stop by, introduce yourself and have some fun. We'd love to show you some of our new stuff and find out why you love bikes, what you ride and where you ride?

Ride and Smile folks.

Hey there Folks!
Been a long time since I stepped foot into the Blog. Can't say I have had much to talk about but I will say I am stoked that Cross Season is finally upon us. Nothin' like a little mud, grass and pavement to get your blood flowin'. Here in Minnesota the racing has already started and there are more races on the calendar than ever. I think there is close to 13 on the local schedule. That is crazy! Of course, I will miss the next few races because of Interbike Tradeshow, but Vegas strip clubs and gambling will keep me busy. (just kidding, Mom)

With that said, our California pro crosser, Brent Prenzlow has already started rackin' up the podiums with a 1st place at the So. Cal Cross Cup #1 in Palos Verdes.

His teammates, also riding on Salsa Las Cruces cyclocross frames, John Behrens (3rd place) and Jeff Herring (7th) also had excellent runs. 3 Salsa Las Cruces riders in the top 10. That rocks.

Speaking of Las Cruces frames, better get yours soon because they are selling fast. We have already sold out of 52cm for the season and the other sizes are going fast. Be sure to outfit your new cross frame with these other Salsa cross products:
Salsa Delgado X rims

Salsa Crossing Guards (NEW!)

Salsa Bell Lap Bars
Salsa Cross Levers
Salsa Pro Scandium Stems (OK, not just for cross, but it is sooooo cool.)
Salsa Goma Tape (this stuff is sticky! Especially when it gets muddy and wet. It is the perfect tape for cyclocross ridin')

Ok. Enough of that stuff.

Big Things and Little Things

I've posted a few times lately on how I've been introducing my son Jordan to mountain biking during the last month or so. It is super cool to watch him grow and learn with each new experience on the trail. I'm pretty psyched about it and am sure proud of him for taking a stab at something that I guess could seem a bit intimidating at times.

Well, bikes are important and all, but not as important as a few other things.

We've been working really hard at reading with Jordan. He'd been struggling a bit with it and was certainly not enthusiastic about the challenge it presents.

The other night I listened to him read page after page in one of his books, only stumbling occaisionaly but a tough, tricky word. I could not have been prouder seeing how he as improved during the last couple months. It blew my mind.

So...good job Jordan. Keep up the hardwork. It will all be worth it in the long run, and you will be glad you worked as hard as you did.

Interbike Prep

Just a quick note today to let folks know what's going on in the next few weeks. As some of you know, Interbike starts next week. We are all scrambling to get a few final things worked out. Meetings. Building demo bikes. A few rides. Dealer order sheets. Catalogs. You name it.

Did I say catalogs....Yes, our new 2006 catalog should be in stock by the end of the week. We received our first copies yesterday and we are loading them on the truck for Interbike today.

Next week, if we are slower to respond than normal, it is because every Salsa employee is out of the office. We will do our best to return your calls & emails and send out catalogs the following week.

For those of you going to Interbike next week, the first person to come in and accurately describe Bobby's hair color and latest style will get a free gift. I'm serious.

Taking Jordan To The River

It has been a real treat in the past couple weeks, introducing my new son Jordan to off-road riding. He's 8-1/2, but only learned to ride a bike a year-and-a-half ago. I was pretty worried at first that off-roading would intimidate him, or that I'd be too pushy a parent and wind up turning off to the experience.

So I prepared myself to try to do a good job as an encourager.

We've gone down the River Bottoms trail three times now in two weeks. When there's something he's not comfortable riding, he gets off and walks and that's fine with me. It has been fun watching the progression start already, as some log piles that were tough for him the first time are now approached with confidence and enthusiasm.

For those that aren't from around here, the River Bottoms is perfect for teaching/learning kids because it is flat, but has a variety of environment, and offers up some minor additional challenges (many of which have alternate lines to avoid them).

Yesterday while watching some freeride DVD's with visiting Salsa graphic designer Ray Stobbe, Jordan asked if we thought he could become a biking superstar. I told him he can become anything he wants if he sets his mind to it and works hard to accomplish it. And that sounds like advice we can all probably benefit from.

Rubber side down. Braaaapppp. Braaaaaappppp.

In an effort to prove that I'm not always a grumpy prude, I thought I would post a bit of a positive rant this time. Its all about me...my ala carte....and my addiction to ano. So kick back, grab a wienharts root beer (we are family friendly after all) and prepare yourself to groan, smile and ultimately wonder why in the world you started reading this in the first place.

Rant #3 "Boy I love ano....."

So... I get ripped on all the time for my obsession with ano parts. Now don't misunderstand here i'm not talking all purple bar ends and stems and bars ....well maybe bars... but rather great accents that make a bike really pop. My latest project was to turn my Ala Carte into my new Single speed steed. I don't have a ton of cash flow so I wanted to use what I could that I had laying around the garage. Immediately my mind turned to a fork. Big money item...I only have one "laying" around. 2001 Atom 80...the blue sparke one with the first generation polished "m" arch. So I'm thinking...this isn't going to go at all with my red ala carte...so I moved on. Looking at parts options, I decided that I wanted to use a White Industries ENO hub for the rear instead of a chain keeper dilly just cause I think it looks cleaner. Now if your familiar with White Industries...you know they do everything in a great high polish. Hmmm....I started to think...and then a hint of a smile came across my lips as I started to inventory my supplies and got back to the fork...I could do an absolutely stellar captain america bike!! So off I went. I then remembered several other parts I had that would work perfect with my new found theme....and thought of a few new ones as well. Boy I love ano!! So I'll save you the rest and give you the skinny. The Red ala carte frame and blue atom 80 we covered...as well as the polished White ENO hub. So... I laced the ENO up to a Salsa Semi rim with black spokes and alternting silver, blue, silver, red nipples. (black spokes make the color pop more...) Then..found myself an old Salsa Freedom flip off from a few years back and threw that through the front xt hub. Found an ano red Titec Hellbent xc riser bar I had stashed away in a box and of course on the bike it went. Picked up a set of the Big Cheese starz grips in the blue and white (oh so pretty on the red bar) and I was off to the races. Ran into a guy a QBP who was selling an old Fizik saddle in the irredesant blue color (uncanny close to the color of the fork) and now I was really on a roll. Then I remembered that Nokon is doing there articulated housing in colors this year so I purchased me a silver kit with a blue add on.... and a red add on. yep..alternating housing!!! How cool is that. Boy I love ano!!! So...what do I need to top it off? Well the right headset of course. Who better to help me out than my good friends over at Cane Creek. They hooked me up with one of their Solos headsets...but not just any old Solos. Blue bottom cup...silver top cup...and a red top/dust cover!! Its way over the top...and I love it. I know...I know...I'm a dork. Its gonna be freakin' cool though I swear. Okay....I think I went on long enough. When its all done I'll see If I can get some pics. Anyway... smile and ride or whatever.

New Salsa Information

Yesterday, Bobby distributed quite a bit of information to our Salsa Dealers. If you are a Salsa Dealer and didn't get it, couldn't receive it because the file was huge, or simply couldn't open it. Please contact Salsa immediately. We'll get you the lowdown.

We've got so many new products and product updates. You'll probably see some pictures somewhere on the web as we are showing many of them for the first time at EuroBike. EuroBike opened today in Germany. We also sent product to our Japanese Distributor for their dealer only show.

For those of you in the Midwest, you can see these products with your own eyes. Next Friday, Salsa will be hosting the MORC Midwest Summit Registration at Lebanon Hills. MORC is doing so much for riding here in MN. We are lucky to have them here and we're lucky to be part of this event.

We'll be bringing all our new products to show and to test ride. Register for the summit. Check out www.morcmtb.org for details. Come out to ride and get some great food. You can find us in the Lebanon Hills parking lot and we'll have our new Primero S3 road bike, our new Dos Niner 29er, and our new El Santo suspension bike available for test rides. Because they are so new, we will have limited sizes available, but we'll still have quite a selection.

Hope to see you next Friday.
