Twas the week before Christmas and all round the shop,
The Salsa crew was ecstatic for the new frame order to drop.
The Dos niners were hung and painted with care.
In hopes that in 06’ they would be seen everywhere.
With Reimer snuggled all snug in his bed,
Visions of espresso danced in Jason’s head.
With Bobby in his buckle and Chuck in his tee,
They all settled down round their big Christmas tree.
When out on in the back there arose such a clatter,
They sprang up in an instant to see what was the matter.
Away to receiving they flew like a flash,
Knocking the tree to the floor with an ominous crash.
The moon reflected off the new fallen snow,
Giving the luster of mid-day to objects below.
When what to their wondering eyes should appear,
But a giant B.O.B. trailer and lots of bike gear.
But twas the rider that gave them all reason to pause,
As they suddenly realized… it was Salsa Clause!
More rapid than eagles on studded tires He came,
He whistled and shouted and called them by name.
“What’s shaken’ there Miker, Bobby and Jason,
How goes it Chucker with this seasons cross racin’?
To the tops of the hills and the valley below ,
On to sweet Northern single-track switchbacks I go.”
And then he took off flinging snow at the crew,
With a trailer full of gear Salsa Clause flew.
And after a few moments they heard on the roof,
the sound of each studded knob tracking him true.
Chuck gazed up at him speechless his mouth wide agape,
Then they saw he was pointing at Salsa Clauses’ cape.
Emblazoned upon it was a great white pepper globe,
That waved in the breeze and flashed like a strobe.
He was dressed in red velvet from helmet to cleat,
Red neoprene booties warmed his chilled feet.
His panniers were bursting with all sorts of toys,
The kind that give smiles to grown up bike girls and boys.
His eyes-how they twinkled! His dimples how merry,
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry.
A handlebar mustache curled up to his ears,
His worn hands stained from all his shop years.
The stump of a pipe he clenched tight in his teeth,
And the smoke encircled his head like a wreath.
He tossed them down gifts wrapped with care from above,
Each one contained bits of two wheeler love.
Then he jumped on his steed and pedaled away
And Miker exclaimed “Gee wiz what a day!”
Then Salsa Clause shouted as he vanished from sight
“A spicy Christmas to all…and to all a good night!”

May you have a Spicy Christmas!!

One Possibility

If you are checking out this blog, the odds are pretty good that you live are living a pretty good life. You might not have a ton of extra dough laying around, but you aren't asking for change in the streets either. In fact, the odds are good that some of you are pretty well off.

'Tis the season for giving, of course, and I'd like to bring up one option for you to consider.

There's an organization here in the Twin Cities called the Solar Oven Society. They have a newsletter called the Solar Spotlight, which is how I first found out about them.

The Solar Oven Society is a non-profit agency that promotes solar-powered cooking. They also coordinate the delivery and sponsorship of Solar Ovens to the needy areas of the world.

I seen one of their Solar Ovens and it is pretty cool. It is lightweight and simple, as you might expect. What if offers the world is improved sanitation, less dependence on coal and firewood, improved living conditions, and better health.

The Solar Ovens are not expensive by our standards, but they are not affordable to the people who can most use them. I encourage you to consider donating to this effort.

For more information, check out the Solar Oven Society website.

Thanks for considering this opportunity,
-Kid

The day has finally come!

This week, something happened that I've been waiting for the last 3+ years. My 6 year old espresso machine is close to dying. Coffee is my 3rd addiction that I've publicly announced on this blog. If your new to the blog, my other two are bikes and bags.

My wife and I received this little Krups machine as a wedding gift 6 1/2 years ago. I've used it almost every day. The process and smell of the coffee relax me and improve my day. Even when we had our twins 3 years ago, I just couldn't let go of my everyday coffee experience. Its become part of me and I look forward to it everyday. Its my own time and I plan my day.

Well...Like any bike freak knows, satisfaction with what you have isn't very common. We always want the next thing, even if what we have is perfectly fine and functional. My old machine worked, but it was slow, imprecise and inconsistent because there were too many variables in the process.

I ordered my new machine today. I'm looking forward to years of enjoyment out of this next machine. I just hope it arrives before Christmas!

Admitting you have a problem

Admitting you have a problem is the first step. I'm sure many of you think I'm going to talk about my addiction to bike parts. While it is true I have a serious addiction to bikes and bike parts, today I'm admitting to the world I've got another addiction. Bags & Cases. Maybe some of you can relate.

Recently, I went Christmas shopping. I thought I was doing so well by being a few weeks ahead of schedule. I wasn't going to screw up this year and I was giving myself some extra time to find something just right for my amazing and patient wife. I figured I'd hit a few stores looking for her gift and then just take a quick look at the Apple Store. You know, just to see if they had any cool new accessories that might be new. This is where my plan veered off course. Sound familiar?!

I quickly got caught up in all the cool new Nano accessories. This happened mainly because Senor Chuck showed me his new Nano case that holds his ID and a Credit or Check Card. I don't even have a Nano. I quickly found myself pricing them just so I could justify buying one of the cool cases. Thankfully, aluminum anodized Shuffle jackets caught my eye. After looking at all the different Shuffle accessories, I decided to buy one of those anodized cases because I wanted some protection when I throw it in my back pack.

While in line, and there was a long one, something caught my eye. It was a new messenger style bag that would be perfect for my computer and a few files. I thought to myself, I shouldn't do that because I already bought a new computer bag earlier this year to go to Germany and the UK. However, I could use one of those nice thin neoprene covers for my computer to keep my computer from getting damaged in my Chrome back pack I bought to go to Japan this year and now use for commuting.

It didn't hit me until I got home. I just justified buying a new Nano and at least two bags or cases when I didn't need any of them. Thankfully, I got out of the store with only the Shuffle jacket.

I kind of chuckled that night when I went to my closet and looked at the floor. I couldn't believe my eyes. I have a bag for every occasion. I saw a bag I take to the gym, an old Rock Shox messenger shoulder bag, and two old Timbuk2 bags. I also noticed the back back I bought my wife to hold her yoga stuff. I then proceeded to the junk/bike room. There I found a back pack, the computer bag I purchased earlier that year, 3 sets of panniers I used to use for my tours, a mid size pack for day trips, about 10 dry bags I used to use for bike touring and back packing, and countless little bags I fill with stuff to pack more stuff in my other bags. Wow, I do have a problem.

Well, this isn't one of those feel good stories where you identify the problem and fix it. I don't plan to fix my newfound addiction. I love bags and cases. Truthfully, I'm thinking of ways to get rid of some of my old bags to help fund some new ones.

Know anyone who needs a bag or two?

The Mighty Cougars

Well, last night was the Cougars first game of the season and my coaching debute. We faced the ominous sounding Team D.

All the Cougars played well, both in Skills Drills and in the game itself. We're really working on our fundamentals, especially when it comes to defense.

Final score: Cougars 24, Team D 4

I've got to tell you that I'm loving coaching. The kids are eager to learn and do their best. We're building a solid team that treats each other and our oponents with respect. And we're having a heck of a lot of fun in the process.

Stay tuned for updates as our season continues!

Peace out.
