Putting it out there
Folks, first of all, I'd like to say thank you for your support over the years. It is always our mission to provide the best products that people actually want.
Well, today our group met again to discuss complete bikes. Should we do them or shouldn't we. This has been an ongoing discussion and we've even made a few attempts over the years. The topic keeps coming up for various reasons. I'd love to share all of them, but it would just take too long.
I'm interested to hear what our readers and customers think? Please know that even if we offer complete bikes in the future, we ALWAYS plan on offering frames. We believe in choice and we believe our frames can be built in too many configurations to just offer one choice but thats our opintion.
We want to know what do you think? If you've got an answer or opinion on one or more of the following questions, shoot PEPPERMAN an email. pman@salsacycles.com
1) Should Salsa offer complete bikes? Yes or No and Why?
2) If yes, all models or specific frame models? Specific areas or niches?
That's about it. Pretty big topic, but short and sweet. We want to know.

Purification Through Suffering
Yesterday was one of those days on the bike. A reasonably stiff headwind and a temp around 30. And those lovely early season legs that can't quite do everything you really want them to do.
Actually, it all really started on Friday. I skipped out of work early and hit the river trail for a little mtb action. For those not from here, the river trails is a flat twisty ride where you can really drop the hammer when conditions are right. But on Friday the trail had some melting snow and ice, some mud, and a few spots of standing water.
But Friday afternoons on the bike don't come often so it felt great to ride with no urgent time frame where I had to be done and back home or back at a desk. So I plugged away at it for a couple hours. Sliding out. Trying not to dab. Riding the giant ice damn on the east side of 35W. Getting back to the car feeling good. Feeling alive. Banging the mud off my shoes and sliding my now mud-coated machine into the back of the van.
Friday's ride actually set up Sunday's suffering pretty well. I've been riding the trainer a lot this Winter. It's so convenient for me. Just wake up, go downstairs, and hop on and spin. The days of the trainer being equated with torture are over. I'm not sure why. It is now almost something enjoyable for me. Something to take sick pleasure in.
But Sunday, I had the go ahead pass from my wife to spend some time out on the bike. I took the road bike off the trainer, suited up and took off. Not many folks out and a headwind from the south and west.
I'm a subscriber to the thought of get the tough part over with first if you can, so that the ride back home can actually be a bit more pleasurable. So west I went, into a headwind that had me in my granny combo a few times and wondering how my heart could actually be beating so fast when I was going so slow.
But there is something beautiful about suffering slowly in a headwind in the early season. It's like taking that first honest look at yourself and seeing just what your goals need to be. What goals you are going to go out and conquer. How you are going to make yourself better. Through the dim pain of suffering you can just barely see that is possible that you are actually going to ride this same headwind later in the summer 3 gears, or maybe 4 gears, higher. How you'll feel your body growing stronger.
And to get there it takes suffering.
When I got home my lady asked me how I could stay out there in the cold riding for that long and I told her it's the only way to get better. Time on the bike. Time spent suffering. Beautifully suffering.

How 'Bout Them Cougars!
It's been a while since I've written about the Cougars basketball team I'm coaching. But since it is game day, it seems like more than an appropriate time to talk about how the season has gone.
The Cougars are on quite a roll. Our record is 8 - 2 and those two losses were our 2nd and 3rd games of the season. It is really amazing to see how much they have learned and how their skills have improved. All with one night of practice a week and one game a week. Our shooting has improved. We run plays and set picks. All that good basketball stuff. Most of all, the Cougars play really tough defense.
We've worked hard to keep our original goals in mind: Having Fun, Improving Skills, Learning Teamwork, and Demonstrating Respect.
That's no easy task actually because the bug to win can really get in your ear. That said, we've maintained fair playing time for all our boys because it really is about just that...boys playing basketball.
If you are in a position where you feel you can offer kids some guidance by volunteering, I strongly encourage you take advantage of the opportunity. They will be greatful and you will be too. It is very rewarding and in a strange way kind of addicting. You can help out with a sport team or by volunteering at the school to help with reading. Or in any number of other ways. Try it once and see what you think after you've done it. I'm sure you'll be glad you did.
Thanks for considering. Go Cougars baby!

FrostBike Funk
Salsa made it through another year of FrostBike. From a business side of things, I think this was the most successful yet, at least in my short time here with Salsa. We connected with Vendors, Dealers and International Distributors. It was amazing. On a personal side of things, it was good too. FrostBike always provides an opportunity to meet old friend and make some new ones.
It wasn't all good. Because FrostBike has gotten so big, we can't receive packages and some really key items have been delayed. We were expecting some more Delgado 29er Disc rims this week, but they were held in the rail yard in Washington state, so we won't be receiving them until the first week of March. Damn. Our out of stock Pro Scandium Stems are on that shipment as well.
One bit of good news though is that our new S3 Primero Road Frames are in stock for the first time. We've already shipped a bunch of them.
I'd also like to send out a special thanks to everyone that came to FrostBike, especially MX International and crew, our Japanese Distributor, for coming all this way and doing an off-road, sub zero degree photo shoot last Friday.

Frostbikin'
Our parent company Quality Bicycle Products hosts a pretty darn big bike dealer-only event each February called Frostbike. They throw some parties, eat some good food, have some fun, and hold what is pretty much the second largest bicycle tradeshow in the country.
Vendors have booths in a much lower key fashion than at Interbike. Less hype, more direct dealer conversation, and no strippers working the day shift of product promotion.
As a vendor of Q's, Salsa will of course have a booth at Frostbike. We invite any of you that might be attending to come up and meet us and let us tell you about our brand, where it has been and where it's going, and all that good stuff. Plus, it is nice to put faces to names, and names to faces.
If you're coming to the Frostbike show, please come see us!

Two Inches Of Traction
Well, some snow is falling here in the Twin Cities. The bad news is that means traffic will absolutely suck tonight and Jordan and I are hitting the Wild game.
The good news is that the trails will get a little more snowcover, and after a few riders, it will be packed down into nice cold white 'dirt'.
For those local folks, the trails are in pretty good shape. I got in some time at Wirth last weekend while the Loppet ski race was going on. Got to watch the leaders come by me while I was in the singletrack. Boy, are they fast. Very impressive.
But I digress. The trails are in good shape, and making turns and weaving through trees feels really good after a few months of indoor trainer riding.
Get out and ride, Kid

Rubbing It in
So Butcher's out there in Cali while the rest of us are here in coldish Minnesota...and what does he do to us?
Sends us this pic today to rub it in.

Nice huh? Sweet sunset. No snow on the ground. Actual dry dirt. Mountains. And a bright shiny new Dos Niner. Yup, something tells me he's having some fun.
Enjoy your weekends everyone! -Kid

Desperate Times Call For Desperate Actions
Well, Jason's leaving tomorrow for a few days of riding in California. When he first let us know that he was gonna get to go play in the dirt I thought, "That's cool." Now of course, I'm seething with envy. That dirty dog.
For all I know, California could be cold and wet while he's there, but unless he's got pictures to proove it, I'm betting it's going to be 70 degrees and sunny with a nice gentle breeze blowing in from the Pacific to keep the moisture away.
Meanwhile, I know what it is going to be like here. We got about 3 inches of wet snow last night, but the temp has been hovering around 34 during the daytime lately turning everything into a sloppy mess. Criminey, if it would get colder it would at least freeze up and some trails would be rideable again. But not right now. Now it is just wet mushy dirt with cold wet stuff on top of it.
So, if you're in the Nor Cal area keep an eye out for Butcher on his shiny, freshly built up Dos Niner. He'll be the guy suffering up the 12-mile climb. Tell him the guys back at the office feel really sorry that he's suffering so badly...NOT!
Peace out. Kid
