The Good Stuff

Last Thursday the whole Salsa kit and caboodle (minus a few folks) took off for an afternoon of trail riding, product testing, and some well-earned beer, pop, chips, and salsa afterward.

It was almost like being a pro rider...in a sort of twisted deviant way I suppose.

We were paid to ride for a good part of our day. Hey, that doesn't get to happen all the time! Most of our real world product testing happens off the clock. We rode some trail, took some photos, rode some more, and so on, until our bellies cried 'Feed Me' and then we headed to my place.

On the way, we took in some of the lesser known singletrack enroute, including the section I call 'Minefield' (it claimed one victim).

Then we got to indulge in the part that the pro's miss. Bean dip, 6 kinds of salsa, boatloads of chips...you get the picture. Wash it all down with some pop or beer. Awwww yeahhhhhh.

That's good stuff.

What The Real Pro's Ride

There are pro riders and there are real pro riders.

Pro riders are paid to ride. They get extra special treatment. They are fast, make no mistake about it. They get to live a sort of deluxe existence...training and racing for a living.

Real pro riders don't get paid to ride (or at least not much). They have jobs, school, or family to take care of. They fit their training into the rest of their lives, not the rest of their lives into their training. And make no mistake about these guys either...they are really fast too.

Salsa is fortunate to have two 'real pro's' riding for us: Jeff Hall and Andrew Freye.

This isn't to say that top pro riders don't work hard. I'm just saying that they don't have to work as hard as real pro riders, like Jeff and Andrew.

So, what does a real pro rider ride?

Check out this Andrew Freye's El Santo race bike here. It is a great explanation of how a real pro decides what to race.

And keep your eyes peeled for Jeff and Andrew this season as they hit the national circuit and key regional races. Give 'em some encouragement to keep after their goals, because they are the ones coming back to their day jobs after a hard weekend of racing.

Thanks,
Kid

El Mariachi Limited Edition Details

Thankfully, we've been taking lots of calls on these. That's good news and thanks to all of you that are interested in this bike. This is an amazing bike.

I wanted to let everyone know that we are essentially SOLD OUT on all Limited Edition El Mariachi's. We pre-sold all 100 of them to existing Salsa Dealers and International Distributors. While we've got a few left, we are signing up some new dealers and holding them for those shops. We hope to ship LE's by the end of May. Look for a link on the homepage for shops that are getting them. If you can't wait until we post the information, please take a look at our dealer page and start making some calls. The dealers and distributors have been pre notified about what sizes and qty they are getting. At this point, it is up to them decide what they want to do with them.

The new El Mariachi production frames and forks are finished as well. They are being QC'd and painted this week. We are still waiting on the EBB's, but I'm still hopeful they will ship by the end of May so we can deliver them to dealers by the end of June or early July.

Lastly, the suns out today and I'm cutting out of here at 4:00 to go ride my El Mariachi!

What The Dealio?

So, it is May 12th. It is cold, windy, and rainy here in the Twin Cities. It is snowing in Wisconsin just to our East.

What the dealio?

Chucker says he thinks the world is coming to an end. I sure hope not.

And if it really is coming to an end, I just wish it would stop raining, warm up, and have the sun come out so we could at least catch some rays during the last days.

Hope the weather is nicer where you are. Enjoy your weekend.

Fast Guys On Salsa Bikes

So the NORBA National Series got underway last weekend out in California. Salsa is fortunate in that we had two fine riders in the Men's Pro XC field.

Longtime Salsa pro rider Jeff Hall finished 23rd on the day after working his way up from the back of the field. He should have a better start spot at the next race as a result of his effort. Jeff is a Minnesota guy who is the epitome of a hard worker. Family man, working man, and pro racer...he makes it hard to complain about trying to fit in riding time because he somehow manages to do it.

Check out Jeff's website at JeffHallMountainBiking.com

It seems a bit odd thinking of Jeff as one of the older guys in the game, especially when he's only racing age 30, but Salsa's other rider is Andrew Freye...and he's racing age 22. Andrew rides for Bikeman.com/Salsa Cycles and is from the great northeastern state of Maine. Andrew finished 62nd on the day.

Read Andrew's report from NORBA NCS #1 on his pro report page.

We hope to have a Team page up on our site shortly that will give you a quick look at how the season is progressing for both of these Salsa riders.

But for now, we'll tell them 'job well done.'.

Enjoy your evening.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for a margarita. Maybe a Texas Jumbo at that.

One year ago today, I got down on my knees and asked my lovely Beck to marry me. Luckily for me she said 'yes'. Tonight we celebrate with some burrito action and a drink. I am truly a lucky man.

The other big news for today is that we've released the information of our new El Mariachi framesets. See the production models on the Frames page of our website.

The production El Mariachi's differ from the Limited Edition version in that they have a deraileur and all the necessary braze-ons to run gears. Still an eccentric bottom bracket. Single or geared...the choice is yours.

Tomatilla Green or Superior Blue. We expect to have them in stock mid-June of this year.

With that, we wish you a happy Cinco de Mayo. If you're partying, be safe.

Enjoy your weekend.

Putting The Time In

So I got another early morning ride each of the last 2 days. Believe it or not, it is actually getting easier to wake up and go.

Jason and I were talking about how it is really all about putting the time in on the bike. Long hours on the bike helps you come around physically on the bike so much. But as many of you know, long rides can really be a precious commodity.

So I (and hopefully you) grab the riding opportunities where I can...and hour here...an hour and a half there.

Believe it or not, but it will actually start to add up. Heck, four 1-1/2 hour rides adds up to 6 hours. Not ideal for building endurance, but it will definitely get the proper muscles developing. Fit in a little heart rate work to give the cardio and lungs some work, and it'll start to pay off.

Turn one or two of those short rides into 3 or 4 hour jaunts, and the benefits will really start to pop.

Watch what you're eating and the pounds will come off. Slowly perhaps, but that is the best way to take them off anyway.

Tomorrow I've got clearance for an early morning departure on the bike and school dropoff is covered. Four hours out on the Dos is what is in store. Time to see how the legs are really coming along.

So I'll sit here today watching the weather outside, hoping these gray skies move along without raining on my parade...because tomorrow I get to continue 'putting my time in'.

Find a way to ride.

Patience Young Grasshopper

Our blissfull month of April has suddenly turned sour on us. A month of sweet weather and riding trails has turned to rain. Rain that they say will last this whole week.

Bummer huh? Yeah, kind of.

Think of it like this. It could be snowing...

Hemanth Shenoi of Verona, Wisconsin sent us this pic this past December after a weekend ride during a 15F snowstorm.

Now I'm gonna be honest about this and say I don't miss the snow one bit. Not one stinking bit. But I also wish the rain would go away.

Hit the pavement, Grasshopper. It is the trails time to dry.
