As Andrew Freye continues his hugely successful 2006 U23 season, he still finds time to sit down at the computer and type up some race reports. This is one thing that sponsors love to see. So all you aspiring young riders out there, take note, Andrew Freye knows how to do it. Here is a little excerpt from his regular postings on the Bikeman.com website:

Long before I got ready to head out west to Sonoma California for the National Mountain Bike Championships I was having dinner with Carl Decker (Giant Bicycles). I asked Carl what Sonoma was like and he described it in one sentence. Carl said “Let me just say the most technical section at Sonoma in 2004 were the switch backs going up the handicap ramp into the raceway.” With that being said I got a pretty good understanding that this race was going to be lame. So I called up the folks from Salsa to see if they could hook me up with a hard tail frame for this race. Since the crew at Salsa is super friendly and are very willing to do what ever they can to help support me they dug around and came up with a Moto Rapido. This was a huge help!

Come See Us At PedrosFest!

Bobby and I are heading out to PedrosFest tomorrow morning for a few days. If you are attending please be sure to stop by and say hello. We'll be representin' in the Salsa booth, but are planning on getting in on the riding action and other fun to boot.

We'll have some bikes there for you to check out and possibly demo.

After Sea Otter this year, I am fully planning ahead. I'll be bringing my mini hip waders just in case we get more rain than they are predicting. My bug jacket is coming along as well because something tells me they'll be biting.

See you at PedrosFest!

Andrew Freye Makes The U.S. World's Team

Congrats to our sponsored rider Andrew Freye for his selection to the U.S. World's Team. Andrew will be racing the U-23 Class MTB World Championships in New Zealand this year.

We're proud to have Andrew representing Salsa over there, just as he'll be representin' for Bikeman.com, the East Coast, the great state of Maine, his friends and family, and the whole rest of the good ol' US of A.

All Andrew has to do now is come up with the scratch to make the trip. If you are interested in making a donation to his World Championship effort, visit www.bikeman.com as they have set up a place for online donations.

Nice work this season Andrew.

It's All In The Pegs

So the other night after Jordan's soccer game, I tell him there's a present for him at home in the back of my van. We get home and I pop the trunk and pull out a shiny chrome Dyno BMX bike with Hutch Mag wheels that I bought from Chef Dog the other day.

Jordan goes nutso. Bonkers. Completely looney and starts jabbering away in incomplete sentences, 'Thank you so much.', etc, etc.

It is dark out but we let him spin it around the block a couple times. And he's still nutso. Ecstatic. Thrilled. He says, 'Now I can cruise around the streets.'

After reading him his bedtime story he still can't speak in complete sentences. Still thanking us for the shiny new (to him) bike.

Now I never had a BMX bike as a kid. I always feel completely out of whack whenever I'm on one. I guess I did have a 24" cruiser a few years back but sold it at some point. But for a kid, a BMX bike is really something they are interested in and down with. Jordan has a nice little 24" wheel Kona mountain bike too. But shifting get a bit confusing. What's simple for me to understand becomes difficult to explain/comprehend when you're dealing with a 9-year-old.

At first, I just didn't exactly get it. Probably still don't actually. But it is all in the pegs.

Pegs make that bike more than a bike. They make it entertainment for not just Jordan, but his friends as well. They ride along on the pegs, and turn that bike into a carnival ride, an adventure, and a good time.

Here's to pegs.

Post National MTB Championship Update

This past weekend our two Salsa pro's took on the best of the nation at the US National MTB Championships in Sonoma, California.

On Friday, our young gun Andrew Freye laid claim to a podium spot with a fine 4th place in the U-23 race. That's a big deal for Andrew (and for us) because it gives him a good chance of being selected for the U-23 team at the World Championships in New Zealand this year. As someone who was to New Zealand earlier this year, I say have a great time regardless of the mountain bike racing! NZ is sweet!

Our longtime pro Jeff Hall came into the championships with hopes of finding a Minnesota'ish course with singletrack, but was disappointed with what he found. What he describes as a bumpy road course (that did actually have large sections of pavement) left him lacking during Saturday's race. But Jeff is a gamer and he plugged on for a respectable 16th place finish.

I've known Jeff a long time and I'm sure he was bummed with his result. He strives for higher goals and works hard to achieve them. But he can also now put that weekend in the past as he looks forward to the final two races of the National Series, where he is currently placed 10th overall.

Andrew and Jeff, congrats on your seasons thus far. Success is sweet and that's what we see in your efforts this season, even when things don't go as you would have liked.

Race on.

Go Team Salsa!

We've got a small addition to this Amigos Blog page that we want to call your attention to. Look down below a bit on the lower right and you'll see a box that says 'Salsa Team'.

Yup, that's where we list our team riders and provide a link to their own sites. There you can read all their heroic and entertaining deeds. Don't think life as a pro is easy either. Our pros, Andrew and Jeff, are the working class heroes of the peloton, mixing school, work, and family-raising in with their training.

And they still take a nice picture!

Congrats by the way to our local pro Jeff Hall on his 11th place overall at the Park City, Utah NORBA National last weekend. Jeff was 7th American on the day and has put together a darn fine string of great finishes this season. We wish him the best of luck this weekend at the U.S. National Championships! Give 'em HELL!

Owed To An Island

I just got back from 4 nights camping on the Island. I'm not saying which Island because that would take all the guesswork out of it for you all and where's the fun in that?

Five days spent with family, riding bikes, swimming in some good cold water, sitting by the fire at night, and just plain relaxing can do the soul a lot of good. It sure did mine.

Find a chunk of time and go spend it in the woods. Breathe in some fresh air. Sleep laying on the ground instead of a bedframe. Listen to the birds singing. Start a one match fire. Feel the sun on your skin and the breeze blowing through the trees. Eat a S'more. Sit and soak in the natural world around you.

All these things are good for you. Try to make some time this summer to do some or all of them.
