Spring Is Here!!! And It Is Raining...DOH.
When you live in Minnesota, you know you're in for a long Winter. Now that's cool and all. There are good things to do in Winter.
But if you're a cyclist, after a few months, or four months, or maybe even five or six months of Winter, you are pretty much ready for Spring.
Spring. When you might get a ride in without a bunch of layers. Hell, maybe even without a jacket.
Spring. When you can stop mid-ride and hang out without shuffling from foot to foot and starting to shiver.
Spring. When you can get off-road and onto the dirt again. Oh wait...it's dumping rain outside and will be into next week and all the metro trails are closed.
DOH!
Hope it is dry and sunny where you are. Because here it's pavement and fender weather.
Enjoy your weekend. Kid

Greetings from Taiwan
Well, just had a few minutes so I thought I'd drop a quick update on the blog regarding Salsa's trip to Taipei tradeshow in Taiwan. I'll apologize in advance that I am not able to post pictures. Sorry.
Dave and I have had a good trip. This trip has been very different so far. Not only is it in a place far far away from Minnesota, Salsa is not displaying product. We are here to meet with manufacturers and hopefully deal with expected issues on future develpment of Salsa products. Regarding that, some projects are going well, others are not. Fairly typical.
Best of Show:
- Some cool new city/life style bikes from the Topeak powerhouse. Jango is the new brand. They are simply awesome. No links to send you too, but I'm sure if you google Jango someone will have posted pictures somewhere.
- Anodized colors. It's been mentioned here on our blog before that color is back. Oh yeah it is. Red and White are the hot colors today. Pink is getting old. Gold is big too. My prediction for next year is that Lime Green Ano is it. Why? Well, since wheels are currently all black, silver or red, one of the big wheel folks is doing some green on their top end wheels so they'll stand out in the crowd. It looks good but I'm sure it will get overdone soon.
- Food. We've had some amazing food here.
- People. Incredibly nice people.
- Catching up with old friends.
- A little bit of 29er product. Saw some future stuff from a few component and tire mfg's and the future looks great. Not much on the bike/frame area as all those meetings were off limits.
Worst of Show:
- Carbon. Now I'm really not a retro grouch or anything. However, one walk through the show and you'd be tired of carbon too. Trust me.
- Food. We'll, I'm a meat and potato's guy at heart. I've loved the food, but every once in a while I get bad feelings in my tummy from all the new odors and flavors.
- People. I don't like fake people and tradeshows are filled with fake BS. "Oh, so great to see you...." Yeah, sure.
Well, that's my short list. I'll post some more stuff when I get home and download and resize all my pics.

Feed My Starving Children
Last night our Cub Scouts den met up at non-profit organization called Feed My Starving Children. FMSC provides meals to starving children overseas. Some Twin Cities corporations helped them develop their meal formula so that the food provides the proper nutrition, while also being simple to prepare. They told us some amazing stories before putting us to work preparing meals for shipment.
I'll share just one story about a boy who at 8 years of age weighed just 19 lbs. Imagine that. Just 19 lbs. As my wife said, Jordan weighted about 19 lbs after he was just 3 months old. FMSC provided food to the boy and after eating just one, one cup meal of it each day for two months, his weight had increased to over 40 lbs.
There were other volunteer groups there at the same time we were. Everyone was shown the basic tasks involved and then we got down to business. In a little over an hour, we packaged 7,776 meals. The work was easy. The kids actually enjoyed it. And they were very happy to be helping some other children who are in dire need of help.
At this time, FMSC is primarily a Minnesota organization with three locations in the Twin Cities. They are in the process of expanding and opening a new location in Chicago though.
I encourage you to check out Feed My Starving Children. If you can, consider donating some time or money to their effort. A little help can go a long, long way.
For my part, the short hour and a half helping last night felt like the least I could do after all the blessings I have received in my life. It felt good to help out others who don't have many folks looking out for them.
Thanks for considering, Kid

Today is the day. Today is the day that I have been looking forward to since about this time last year. Today is the day that I cast all my cares away and fly off into the night for a week of relaxation and bliss. Today is the day that I catch a plane on my annual excursion bound for California to carve up the slopes of Mammoth Mountain. Yee Haw! The snow report isn't the greatest this year, but on the flip side I guess I can't complain too much about riding in a t-shirt....its a novelty for us Minneosta types. So I shall see you all again when I return, unless of course my good buddy Shawn White askes me to join his new team and go on tour with him and his crew. Yeah...thats about as likely as me buying a Kelly Clarkston record.
Have a good week all!

Judy the Cat
Yesterday was a difficult day. My beloved cat took her last breath. My wife had Judy for 11 years. I met my wife almost 10 years ago so she's been with me for a long time too. Judy wasn't great with strangers. In fact, it took her 2 years to warm up to me... But who can blame her right?
This was not only a difficult day for us, but also for my two 4 1/2 year old kids. Thankfully, their view is far more simplistic than that of adults. My boy wanted to know if Kitty went to Kitty Heaven? Both my kids cried for a bit and asked for a new pet. Thankfully, their minds quickly went to the cookies we had made today and they have since moved on. I miss my friend Judy. She got up with me every morning for the last 8 or so years. She hung out with me while I made coffee and watched the news. This morning was lonely. It's hard to believe how much you can care about a little furry animal.
Judy, best wishes in kitty heaven and thanks for 11 great years. You are missed.

End Of The Line
Well, last night my 3rd/4th grade basketball team, The Kings, lost in our first playoff game. It wasn't what we had in mind but I had a feeling we were in for a tough night. After losing only one regular season game and taking first place in the league we had high hopes of continuing our winning streak. But we didn't play all that well, the other teams guards really worked us over, and we didn't have one of our best big men due to a sledding accident! Hah! Only in 3rd/4th grade basketball right? Oh yeah, the refs sure worked us over too. Ah well...
After the game our kids held in their disappointment pretty well. On the court it was heads up high. But there were some tears in the hallway during our post game meeting. Such is life. I remember crying after some tough, meaningfull losses in high school.
We're having one more practice just for the fun of it, even though we have no more games. And we have an end of the season party next week Friday night.
I've been thinking about what I want to say at the party and came to this thought: For 3 hours a week, I've been able to be a friend and mentor to these 10 boys. You can't ask for a greater priviledge than that.
Consider being a volunteer coach. Not only will the kids gain from it, but you will as well.
Peace out. -Kid aka Coach Mike

Lucky Winner
Every once in a while, things just go as planned. Can you believe it? Brian Neeley of Michigan was the lucky winner of a Dirt Rag give away. What did he win? Well, he won a Salsa Limited Edition El Mariachi.
The great thing about this is that Brian really deserved to win. How do I know this? Well, because all too often when you give something away at an event, the stuff just ends up on E-Bay, Craig's List or some other online auction site. Not this time. Brian is stoked to get this bike. He's also planning out his races for next year!
Brian worked with ADA Bike Shop in Ada, MI to spec this bike. Brian has been a joy to work with. I truly hope I get a chance to meet you. Look for Brian at a couple of Michigan classics, the Lumberjack 100 and Iceman.
Thanks Brian and props to ADA for a sweet set up!
Ride and Smile,
Jason

Salsa Is At The Minneapolis Bicycling and Travel Show This Weekend
If you are close to the Twin Cities this weekend, here's your chance to come check out our frames and to chat with some of the Salsa crew. We'll be at the Minneapolis Bicycles and Travel show at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Come see Katie, Don, or Kid Riemer. Check out our products and ask us any questions you may have. We'll have complete El Mariachi's and built up Casseroll's for you to take a peak at.
Here's the skinny on the show:
Minneapolis Convention Center, March 3 + 4 Hours Saturday 9:00- 7:00 Sunday: 9:00- 5:00
Don't let some snowy roads keep you homebound. Head on down to the convention center and get yourself amped up for another fine season of riding. This fluffy white stuff won't last long now...will it?
Visit the Minneapolis Bicycle and Travel Show show website for more information.
