Additional Features
High-Modulus Carbon Fiber Frame
This material offers improved stiffness, better vibration damping, excellent durability, and weight savings compared to other frame materials
Mukluk Geometry
Mukluk’s geometry works extremely well in all conditions and use cases, whether it be riding groomed singletrack at your local trail, exploring a beach coastline, or embarking across the wild frozen expanses of Alaska. At its core, we use the shortest chainstay possible with a headtube angle and fork offset that place the rider’s center of gravity further over the rear wheel. This location and combination of front and rear center is key to getting a fat bike that is stable, steers well in loose conditions, and still feels nimble and agile despite the massive wheels and tires. A low bottom bracket is also key, to keep the rider’s center of gravity low, and to make dabbing, dismounting, and remounting easier
26 x 4.6” Wheel & Tire Size
Mukluk rolls on 26 x 4.6” tires on 80 mm rims. This huge tire delivers massive traction, stability and optimum floatation on soft surfaces such as ungroomed snow or loose sand
Kingpin Carbon Fork
Featuring carbon construction with an aluminum steerer, the Kingpin Fork is lightweight and durable, and features an amazing array of accessory bosses to help you make the most of your Mukluk: Two sets of Three-Pack bosses on each leg for water bottles for Anything Cages / Lowrider mounts work with our Down Under front rack for a traditional touring setup / Internal dynamo hub wire routing keeps the front end clean / 150 x 15mm thru-axle design boosts stiffness and aids in solid tracking on the trail
Alternator Dropouts V2.0
Mukluk Carbon is spec’d with a two-position fixed plate, with the first of the two openings allowing room for a 4.7” tire on a 70mm rim while keeping a chainstay length of 432mm. The second position sets the wheel a little further back giving you options for larger tire/rim combinations. Adjustable plates are available separately for singlespeed setup or finer adjustments
Front Fork Wheel & Tire Options
The fork included with this frame works with the following wheel and tire combinations: 26 x 3.8–5.0” on up to a 100mm rim / 27.5 x 3.0–4.0” on an 80mm rim / 29 x 2.3–3.0” on a 50mm rim
Rear Wheel & Tire Options
Mukluk is designed for use with up to 26 x 4.8” fat bike tires on rims up to 100mm wide. The frame is also compatible with following wheel and tire combinations: 26 x 3.8–4.8" on up to a 100mm rims / 27.5 x 3.0–4.0” on an 80mm rim / 29 x 2.25–3.0” on a 50mm rim
Optimal 1x or 2x Drivetrain Design w/ Narrow Q-Factor Cranks
The Mukluk frame is 1x and 2x compatible and designed for premium drivetrain performance while maintaining narrow fat bike crank arms for less knee stress: 197mm symmetrical rear end for modern rim/tire fit
FAQ
Will the Manitou Mastodon suspension fork fit on my Mukluk?
Mukluk Carbon = Yes, but customer needs to check crown clearance if less than 3mm. (If less than 3mm, Salsa offers a Cane Creek spacer part # HD8880); Mukluk Aluminum = No
What wheel and tire sizes can I use on this bike?
Mukluk Carbon and Aluminum frames are designed to work with:
26 x 3.8–5.0" on up to 100mm rim
27.5 x 3.0–4.0" on an 80mm rim
29 x 2.3–3.0" on a 50mm rim
Can I use a suspension fork on this frame?
Yes, this frame was designed and tested for use with a suspension fork with an axle-to-crown length up to 511mm (typically 100mm of travel). Check the fork manufacturer’s specifications to ensure the model and travel combination you intend to use is equal to or less than this length. Using a longer length fork will void the frame warranty and could result in frame failure. Forks with 51mm offset are strongly recommended, but 45mm offset is also acceptable (increases mechanical trail by 6mm).
How do I take care of the Alternator dropouts?
Periodically, we recommend that you remove the bolts, and clean the dirt and grime off the hardware and the frame surfaces. Then, lightly regrease the threaded parts and re-assemble.
Do you offer touch-up paint?
No, we do not offer touch up paint. Hobby shops or automotive stores are excellent places to find paint. We suggest you test the paint on a scrap piece of metal before using it on your frame.
I crashed and dented (or cracked) my frame. Is it safe to ride?
Stop riding your frame immediately and take it to the nearest Salsa authorized dealer for inspection. A dented or cracked tube represents a structural weakening of the frame, and is a safety risk.
